I can't bring myself to just put in a couple of 110's from a big box store so I was thinking about a trip to Colaws to try and pick up a couple ( any excuse for a road trip down RT 66) .Are the savings worth the 10 hour trip and do they give any kind of warranty on such items ? Another big question 3ways or 2ways? I've had some guys tell me don't bother with the 12v as they don't cool that well.

Model year: 2006 Classic
Length: 30 feet
Rims: 15x6 six lug aluminum wheels as supplied by Airstream (5.5 inch dia. bolt circle)
Axels: Dexter
Brakes: Dexter hydraulic disc brakes
Centramatic part number: 200221SPECIAL (The word SPECIAL is important in the part number)
Centramatic contact: Jerry Robertson

We have not yet used the trailer since the installation. Now for a question. How am I going to tell if the Centramatic balancing assemblies have improved the ride? Can someone suggest what to look for?

Hello all,

I am the recent proud owner of a 1961 or according to the previous owner, despite the vehicle id number (J1246120) a 1966 Tradewind International.

I am not sure if there is a proper medical condition for being obsessed with Airstreams, but I have it and want to go on the record as saying a name for this condition should exist.

I have started to gut the interior and have opened up a can of worms, most of which I can handle but I am stumped on the plumbing and in particular how to best design a black/gray water waste system.

From what I have read, airstream only put a black water tank in my model year. I would like to upgrade to a black/gray system but have been spending sleepless nights trying to find a configuration that works with the room I have.

The dimensions of the area I have to work with is between the last two steel trailer supports measuring approximately 57' long, by 28" wide, by 7" deep. I think, I stress think I have a solution with two 11 gallon tanks (28" X 22" x 6.5" each) but I am not sure if 11 gallons is enough for each of the tanks. I am not sure if I have to stay within the 7" height of the steel support or if the tanks can protrude past the steel beams.

My next dilemma is trying to find the room to connect the two tanks with the appropriate shut off valves and dump drain. I have researched a product by Valterra which seems to look like what I need but I am unsure. Each of the drains are offset about 5 inches which is making it difficult to get enough ABS in there to make the proper connection.

Has anyone installed a similar system in a similar trailer that may be able to help? Any diagrams out there? I appreciate any help and look forward to learning more so maybe I could help folks out one day.

Thank you,

Todd

Hello! Just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi!

We just bought a 1967 Safari International. We are very excited about taking our 4 little boys camping in "Eleanor" soon... We just have a bit of work to do!

The interior was actually very complete and passable. But, I love interior design (and am a historic preservationist... longhand for "perfectionist") so of course, I immediately spent hours searching through vinyl, laminate, fabrics, etc. for the project. The turquoise reminds me of a Tiffany's box!

Husband is actually more interested in fixing the frame first. Imagine that! We noticed while buying it that we had a bit of slumping in the back. Steven got underneath and found the frame has been repaired before, and broke again. We are dragging out the welder to get that sturdied up.

Once we get it done, I am hoping to tow it behind my 1963 Rambler wagon. That might be next summer though...

I will be throwing pictures of our project up on the blog I maintain for our stone cottage renovation.. so if anyone is interested, I can post a link once I get some pictures up!

Looking forward to chatting! I am sure I will have lots of questions for you all. I have already been bookmarking threads for reference.

Thanks,
Sarah Beth

I'm trying to put a new 7 pin connector plug onto the trailer umbilical and I have a diagram for a configuration which doesn't match the tow vehicle's (2001 Tahoe) color codes for turn lights, stop lights, etc. I know I can just switch things around until the proper match is attained, but I want the trailer wires and colors to match any standard tow socket. I guess a universal color code might not exist, but is there a way I can determine whether color of wire or position in plug is the priority? And, yes, I know you can run all the wires in fuscia if you want, but for ease of future maintenance, it'd be wise to do it correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is the diagram I downloaded from one of the threads. It looks like it might be a mirror image of the actual condition of the umbilical plug (based upon my dissection of the old plug which wasn't a blade-type connector)...or am I over-thinking this???

Hello,
For about the last two months I have lived in my AS helping my son at Starkville MS. About two weeks into the venture with the outside temp in the 90's I went to the camper and approaching it did not hear the AC running. Went inside and could smell something that had burned or was still burning:sad:.
After inspection found that the neutral wire had burned into inside the power panel. With the help of my son we got the cable that feeds the power into the camper and cut it off about 6 inches. Hooked everything back up except the AC and turned on the power and everything seemed to be ok. Checked across the AC feed with multimeter and found no short on wire.
Went to the power panel to remove the main breaker and when I did everything in the power panel fell apart. The only answer was to replace the power panel and breakers. Could not find a replacement at a local electric supply house. Went by Lowe's and "BEHOLD" they had almost the exact panel on the shelf. Purchased the panel and correct size breakers and replaced early the next morning before it got to hot. Everything worked fine except unable to use GFCI breaker where the book called for it. The old panel did not have one either in this spot. Sure was good to enjoy the AC again.:D

A little Background - I am replacing the sub-floor in read of my 71 Overlander. After opening up the internal shell I found that the rear U channel is broken in 2 places. It seems to have been done during (or before) a repair for rear end separation. I was trying to get a new piece of alum. to repair it properly while I was in there. I took it and a couple other pieces to a local sheetmetal place (local - almost an hour from my house). After not hearing fomr them in a week I called and was informmed that they had not even started on it yet and it would be at least three weeks before they would. Anyway, when the items were picked up the 4 foot piece of U channel was missing. I only took the short piece -I wanted 12 foot and I would bend it myself but now I did not even have that piece. I was informmed by the boss that he was not responsible for it since he did not see it and the girl that was there when I dropped it off said she could not remember what was dropped off.

Now for the rest of the story!!

I found what I needed from Lowes - I will need to do a little manfacturing but it will work. But, the piece that was lost seemed to be cut off short to me - might have been during the repair. One the TV drivers side toward the rear where the water heater opening is - how far does the U channel wrap around. On the other side it comes up about 4 inches short of the side channel. Here it is more like 2 feet. I have attached pics of the rear.

”In light of the current economic situation and the downturn in sales of recreational vehicles, Hi-Lo Trailer can no longer continue to operate,”

Hi-Lo, the company that originally brought late Thor Industries Inc. chairman Wade F.B. Thompson, into the RV industry, manufactured a unique telescoping travel trailer that used a push button hydraulic system to automatically raise, lower and lock the top that fit over the lower portion of the trailer when in travel mode.
Thompson ran Hi-Lo for three years before he and Orthwein acquired Airstream Inc. from Beatrice Foods, beginning to build Thor Industries into a national power.

Hi I am new ...hello to all.

Recently I bought my first trailer, a 22 foot 1949 Curtis Wright clipper- I love it.
Much of the trailer has been refurbished but I will over the next months have a few questions. First and foremost is the 4" tube frame. The interior was never painted and it has rusted to the point that the lowest portion of the tube is visibly somewhat thinner due to water sitting in the tube. It still appears thick enough for support but I would like to halt any further corrosion . I thought I should remove the rust and paint it with rustoleum rust inhibiting paint... but how?

I thought I might get a chimney sweep brush or hire some professional(?) to remove any loose rust, but then how to paint, if that is even the best way.
I figure someone out there has done this, please advise.

In anticipation of a trip this weekend, wanted to go to the trailer and make sure everything was fine with the TV. Apparently the ride high is higher in the Denali, maybe due to the 20" wheels vs 17" currently on this Yukon...whatever it is, have to adjust our hitch.

The bigger issue though lays with the electrical. Had no problem with the Denali and the trailer plug. The "new" TV, an issue. Same TV model (almost) same year, same plug etc. Plug it in and the backup lights turn on dimly on the TV, and, no other lights except the Argosy's back lights are on. Blinkers don't work on the Argosy or do the running lights on the front.

I think I can go under the safe assumption that the issue is with this particular tow vehicle as the previous one had no issue 2 weeks ago.

THe one x-factor here, at least for me, is that the TV's previous owner put in HID headlights. I have an email out to him asking him if he did it or a shop did, but regardless, not knowing enough about HID, anytime there's electrical work done, there's always the chance that wiring was crossed up somewhere, grounds were changed, fuses blown or whatever.

Not being that handy electrically, and not having a testing meter, not sure where to go. Will take it to the GM dealer and hopefully they can fix it tomorrow, but in advance of that, any ideas.

So is it:
A bad TV electrical receiver plug?
Mixed up wires/ground from the electical plug? (possibly modified when TV got HID's?)
A short in the system?
A blown fuse in the TV? Likely not, I assume that electrical plug runs off a single fuse, and since there is a light that comes on (meaning some power is getting to the trailer).

Help..hopefully it is an easy fix. Cutting it close for leaving in a couple days, and if dealer can't take a look at it or figure out what the issue is we have no trailer lights/signals...

Thoughts? An easy GM dealer fix or something a little more terminal?
TIA

Long story short, we had a 2007 Yukon Denali but for financial reasons, had to downgrade for the time being and sold it (for a profit, no less, after almost two years!)

Were looking at older and fortunate to get a 2007 regular Yukon for a great price. So, in anticipation of heading out in a couple days again, was smart enough to go down to the where the trailer is stored to check on it and make sure the new TV is a similar setup for hitch height etc, being basically the same truck.

Well, good thing we did...the hitch height on the regular Yukon looks to be an inch and a half or so higher, as the Argosy's power jack couldn't "recoil" far enough up after getting to the bottom. Through a longer story, we were lucky that we got an adjustable hitch from the previous owner when we bought the Argosy a few months ago. However, the nuts and bolt on those hitches are heavy duty and the wrench I had with me, so it will get adjusted hopefully at the hitch shop tomorrow when they reinstall my brake controller.

The bigger issue though lays with the electrical. Had no problem with the Denali and the trailer plug. Sure, had to jiggle it a bit to get it in, but worked no problem. The "new" TV, an issue. Same model (almost) same year, same plug etc. Plug it in and the backup lights turn on dimly on the TV, and, no other lights except the Argosy's back lights are on. Blinkers don't work on the Argosy or the running lights on the front.

Read a bit on the net that it could be a faulty ground.

I think I can go under the safe assumption that the issue is with this particular tow vehicle.

THe one x-factor here, at least for me, is that the TV's previous owner put in HID headlights.
Not being that handy electrically, and not having a testing meter, not sure where to go. Will take it to the GM dealer and hopefully they can fix it, but in advance of that, any ideas. It can't be the trailer plug, it worked fine the 5 times we've had the trailer out with the previous vehicle.

So is it:
A bad TV electrical receiver plug?
Mixed up wires from the electical plug? (modified when TV got HID's?)
A short in the system?

Last week while camping, I found that my belly pan was sagging because it had popped over a lot of the rivets in the back 1/4 of the trailer. That's how the mice got in (I think). I have caught 4 with regular mouse traps, one got out of a sticky trap last night, so I have at least one more in there. I think they are hiding down by the holding tanks during the day, and coming up in the pantry/closet area during the evening (I heard them every night from 4:00 - 5:00am last week). I don't want to use poison because then I can't get the dead ones out and my trailer will stink as they decompose. Any suggestions are much appreciated!!!

I'm having a problem getting my battery to charge up when it's hooked to my truck. When I went to raise the trailer after having been plugged into 120v all winter, it was dead. I had to plug the 120v back in to raise the tongue. This past week, before we went camping, I charged up the 12v battery (a cheap car battery because that's all I had at my disposal). We drove for 6 hours and the battery was fine for about 3 days. I decided to charge up the battery by hooking the trailer up to my truck. My brother-in-law brought over his battery/load tester and told me that there was no charge getting to the battery (it was at 10.5V and not moving). He thinks it's my truck (new to me 2006 GMC 2500 Duramax crew cab) because in his 2010 Ford F150 he had to install a fuse and a relay (that were in his glove box) to get his battery to charge. I think that it may be my trailer. What colour are the wires that lead from the 7 pin connector to the converter/charger? (I have a 1986 29' Sovereign, rear beds). I wouldn't be surprised if one of he previous owners disconnected the converter from the 7 pin connector lead. Sorry for being so long winded.

I am thinking about downsizing from my home (storing stuff & selling my house). Haven't bought the trailer yet, but would get a new 25 foot International CCD. Am thinking about what to keep with me in the Airstream. I LOVE black & white photography, have a very nice collection, & really want it with me. I would keep the curtains over some of the windows pulled, then hang the photography over the drapes. What I've visualized would look great, however, as I read about moisture in RV's, I worry about preserving my collection, as well as the two small antique Persian rugs I would bring. I really need to knock down my living expenses, want mobility, & love Airstreams. It would be me & my German Sheperd dog.

Dogs pant == moisture, & then there's the shower & cooking--although I try to keep the cooking to a minimum! I have read about members. Who use dehumidifiers....

What have other owners done in regards to living full time in their Airstreams with an art collection? Is this realistic? I live in the Pacifuc NW, & will travel locally.

There is a roughly 4' X 4' cover on the underside of the trailer in the far rear under the bed/bath section of my 25' Safari SS. One side has come undone and is hanging down some leaving a 2" gap at the center. I was just going to button it back up but the fiberglass insulation above it is wet. I haven't travelled recently so it is not from the road. There is no visible water or staining anywhere inside. Any ideas where the water could be from. Do you think I should just close it up and hope that fixes things?

On my new rig, I noticed that I have no 110V power from shore power. I also tried with 2 honda 2k and still no power. With inverter, everything works fine. Everything worked fine when we picked it up. So, I opened everything up and found that I have a short on the 110v. somehow the transfer switch on the parallax converter got burnt. Now, I don't know if the switch caused the short or the other way, but this being a new AS, I dropped it off at the local AS dealer to get it fixed under warranty. To my surprise the service tech had mentioned that sometimes the honda generators have a conflict with parallax converters due to the fact that honda generators have different wave lengths. He said that he read it in several places on the internet. Now, this guy seems pretty knowledgable and is very professional, and since my rig is just beginning its life(2011), everything is under warrantee for 2 years, so he has no financial gain by telling me that. Have any of you ever heard something like that?

I have a 1976 Argosy 24. It has the original Armstrong A/C unit installed. The unit puts out cold air, but it is very noisy (Vibration).

Is this normal? Any thoughts on how to correct if not?

I have a 1994 Excella 1000 and the front vent cover has just disintegrated from sun exposure. I would like to replace the cover and weather seal because the fan still works just fine. Also, if I put in either a Fantastic Vent or a MaxxFan I'll lose the two rows of lights either side of the opening inside. It seems that it would be cheaper to replace the cover and weather stripping and then just cover the whole thing with one of those aerodynamic covers to keep the rain out.

But when I go out on the web, what I find is a vent cover that runs around $70 or more. It doesn't make sense to spend that money on an almost 20 year old system.

Does anyone have a source for the plastic vent cover and weather seals? Or am I just barking up the wrong tree on this one?

I am starting the search for my "forever" Airstream. I'm 42, and after restoration, I'm hoping this one will last me the rest of my life.

Ideally I'll be looking for a 70s longer A/S in the 28-31 ft area.

As I plan to do a full bottom-up rebuild on it, I can take something that is struggling - I nearly pulled the trigger on a Sovereign a few days ago that had the worst rear end separation I've ever seen, but we were unable to agree on price - I think $3500 for something that requires new everything is a bit steep - and I am not exactly wealthy myself. (And after restoring an Airstream, that'll certainly be true!)

I'm not looking to do a pure restoration - I would keep the outside 100% original but intend to do the interior in a modern cherry/aluminum style, with a rear queen bed. Down the SS would be the shower and toilet, and the CS would have two bunks. Then a large and comfy living area. Finally, a front kitchen.

I intend to make lightweight cabinets and furniture from teak or maybe red oak, with aluminum inserts. The interior would be completely re-wired and re-plumbed. The interior panels would be updated.

I really plan for my lifetime Airstream to be a boondocker's dream: solar panels, LED lighting, gas/electric appliances and a larger fresh water tank figure in my plans.

And so my search begins! I'll photograph everything I look at, and post in this thread.

Guys and Gals,
With my awning up or down have a lot of rainwater that runs down the side of camper. Gets everything wet that is sitting close to to the camper or just under the edge.
Put awning out today to wash and clean and treat with high Tech fabric guard "303". Noticed when I was looking toward the top of camper while standing underneath the awning that I could see light in several places where the awning is fastened to the AS. Climbed up on ladder and found most of the caulking had turned loose at the same point thus letting light under the (I guess mounting rail for the awning).
This brings me to asking what is the best caulk to use at this point. I have read that TremPro 636, Vulkem 116, ParBond, Acryl-R, and Seamermate are all good. At this point on the AS what has other people used that gave good results? Thanks for any help in advance. Sorry for the long post.

Hi all, nice site. Years ago I clipped an ad from a magazine, 1971 mag. The ad was for Chrysler T&C a man named Mr. Jamensin was looking for a good car to tow with, the trailer in tow was an Airstream. I am, by fault of the Dukes of Hazzard, a Mopar man. I have only owned such, including a recent (March 09) 1969 Chrysler T&C, a good resto canadite, needs alot but only 84k on her when I got it. I have a 69 Charger as well, and have put 50K on it in 8 years, so I wanted another car, for fun, that might relieve the Charger from so much milage. I grew up in the back seat of a wagon, so the T&C was an easy choice. Now, with a great tow vehicle, the pursuit of a good trailer is in order. I am staying vintage, looking for 68-72, wanting 25ish foot (you can find a 31 so easy!) I have stumbled across a 72 Tradewinds, in nice shape, for $5000. What can you all tell me about this trailer berfore I buy it? The trailer only has a few dents, two up high on the rear, and it has a dark finished wood inside, I would like to know when they changed to dark, because I see a 1969 ad, and it seems light, almost cherry like. Well, more info on me to come, ask questions and give me some advise to get started. MPJ
